A Global First

Uganda's UCCB Benchmark

Integrated into the International AI Safety Framework

The Landmark Achievement

In a landmark moment for sovereign AI and global collaboration, Crane AI Labs is proud to announce that our Ugandan Cultural Context Benchmark (UCCB) Suite has been officially integrated into the Global AI Safety Framework.

This initiative, led by the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and its world-leading AI Safety Institute, marks the first time an African-developed benchmark has been adopted as part of a global standard for AI evaluation.

This is a monumental step towards ensuring that the future of AI is not only powerful but also culturally aware, equitable, and safe for all communities.

A New Standard for Responsible AI

This integration is more than just an acknowledgment; it's a fundamental shift in how the world's most advanced AI models will be tested and deployed.

Global Validation for African Context

For the first time, leading AI labs will be required to test their models against a benchmark built by Africans, for Africans. The world's most powerful AI companies, including Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic, will now evaluate their frontier models against the cultural and linguistic nuances of Uganda as a standard part of their safety protocols.

🌍
A Blueprint for the Global South

The UCCB's adoption serves as a powerful blueprint and a call to action for other African nations and countries across the Global South. It proves that it is both possible and necessary to create sovereign benchmarks that ensure local cultures, values, and contexts are represented in the development of responsible AI.

📊
From Theory to Practice

Our work moves the conversation on AI ethics from theoretical debate to practical, measurable implementation. The UCCB provides a scientific framework to answer the question: "Does this AI truly understand us?"

About the UCCB: A Sovereign Tool for Cultural Safety

The Ugandan Cultural Context Benchmark (UCCB) is not a simple translation test. It is a comprehensive suite designed to measure an AI's deep, contextual understanding.

Developed in collaboration with dozens of Ugandan domain experts, linguists, and cultural leaders, the UCCB is a living asset that represents a new paradigm for AI governance.

Our Vision: A Truly Global & Equitable AI Future

This is a proud moment for our team and for Uganda, but it is just the beginning.

A Call for Collaboration

We hope this achievement sparks a movement, encouraging other nations to develop and contribute their own sovereign benchmarks. A truly global AI requires a globally representative set of evaluations.

Our Upcoming Research

We are committed to open science and transparency. We are currently finalizing a detailed research paper on the methodology, development, and initial findings from the UCCB. This paper will be shared with the world to provide a clear, reproducible guide for other teams to follow.

We believe that for AI to benefit all of humanity, it must reflect the diversity of all humanity. This collaboration is a powerful step towards making that future a reality.
